Amazing Spider-Man 2: It's... not great. They get so, so many things right, but the franchise is trying to build a Marvel style universe in two movies, so nothing ever sits still. It's a real shame, because there is a good movie I here, but Kurtzman and Orci aren't the ones to write it.

There was just enough good stuff in ASM2 to make it a really frustrating experience. You hit the nail on the head; they're trying to do quickly what Marvel/Disney has done more organically and as a result they squeezed three movies' worth of stuff into one.

As a result, ASM3 is more or less backburnered. We may see a Sinister Six film, we may not, but without Garfield as Spidey I couldn't be bothered.

No. No there isn't.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes: This is the third time I've watched this in the calendar year. Been a long time since I've done that. My kids love it. I do too. Stoked to show them the sequel when it hits baby Blu.

Casino Royale (2006): This is fresh off a For Your Ears Only/Ian Fleming audiobook binge and not only held up well, but was even more well-crafted and compelling than I remember it being. It was particularly refreshing to see Bond more reckless and even more cocky than we're used to, while Eva Green might be my favorite Bond girl. Le Chiffre wasn't the best villain and the addition of a breather and a bleeding eye sort of felt like a halfhearted attempt to make him a bit of freak like Jaws or Dr. No; however, if he had been too well-written or -developed, he could have overshadowed Craig, and Mikkelsen was appropriately menacing for the role. The only thing that puzzled me about the plot was what prompted him to pursue Vesper after celebrating winning the match.

While I can sort of see why the reboot rankles some people, an adaptation of Casino Royale simply would not work if Bond were a resolute veteran agent that had already gone through legions of women, villains, and high stakes games. He'd either breeze his way through the game, Le Chiffre, and Vesper's betrayal and death and we'd have no reason to get invested in him (the whole Invincible Bat-God Syndrome), or he'd look like a fool for letting it all get to him and for rookie mistakes like forgetting to plug in his defibrilator. Plus, who can blame Broccoli and Wilson/EON for wanting to wipe their hands clean of Die Another Day?

Quantum of Solace: It may be unfair to watch this right after Casino Royale, but thought it would be appropriate since it's supposed to happen literally right after the end of that movie. Even without that in mind, it's mediocre at best. While I can't fault any of the acting (especially from Craig and Wright), the editing of the action scenes is choppy, the plot is lazy and crude, and at times it feels like a Captain Planet episode. The big touchpad table and screen feel out of place in a Bond film otherwise devoid of gadgets and the stylized location titles are just annoying--especially in Port-au-Prince where you can barely see it.

Oh, it's better.

Andy Serkis should get some sort of Oscar for his performance as Caesar, that's for damn sure. I've never seen Caesar as a CGI creation and its all down to him.

I've never ascribed to that before Dawn of the PLanet of the Apes. It feels so much like watching a real character. A lot of that, despite what Serkis would have you believe, is down to a really great effects team.

The Addams Family: My kids laughed their asses off because they had no idea what was going on. Amazing. Angelica Huston? Yes, please.

The Fifth Element: I know it's a very decisive film but it's still one of my favorite sci-fi films. Lee-lo is an awesome protagonist and the Opera scene is one of the best edited action scenes of all time.

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation: Not as bad as I remember but still filled with questionably acted scenes and a truly terrible script. Looking forward to the TT episode.

My Little Pony: Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks: The name is way too long. Anyone going into this expecting anything more than a cash grab doesn't know what they're looking for. It's not great but if you're a member of the core audience, it's interesting enough. Still, some bad line readings and big plot problems. Some nice songs and Tabitha St. Germaine burns it up as usual.

Skyfall: Better than Quantum of Solace, though a bit overlong and at times underwhelming. Wasn't nearly as annoyed by Bond managing to survive the pre-credit scene or the return of the Goldfinger car as much as I thought I would be.

Everything or Nothing: Documentary commemorating 50 years of James Bond films and following the history of Ian Fleming, Broccoli and Saltzman, and the Bond actors. Depicts Kevin McClory as an relentless monster; however, given how frankly his friends spoke of him, that might well have been the case. My favorite parts are Lazenby's account of how he conned his way into the role of Bond and Dalton talking about the self parody of the Moore films, set against the motorized gondola and Jaws love scenes in Moonraker.

Carrie (2013): The acting is competent at least. The rest... not so much. This is not the worst remake I've ever seen. Probably not even in the top 50. Really, you end up feeling more bad for Julianne Moore's Margaret White than her daughter.

Black Sunday: Italian horror. Pretty good and the practical effects are top-notch. Seriously, like better than some of the stuff I see nowadays.

Gone Girl: Definitely an early contender for Best Picture and just fucking terrific. Ian, btw, Rosalund Pike takes her top off. Just saying. She also puts in a great performance. So does Ben Affleck. The next time some idiot makes a "Bat-fleck" comment, my comeback is Gone Girl.... followed by me wondering what the fuck I'm bothering to argue with some stupid troll.
